This six-week advanced course focuses on research and theory on medical discourse and interaction in healthcare interpreting.  To link theory to practice, participants will:

  • Complete readings on healthcare interpreting,
  • Reflect on their own experiences,
  • Complete activities and engage in discussions applying the readings to their work.

This is a reading-intensive course, similar to a college class. Expect to:

  • Devote approximately 30-50 hours to reading and completing course activities,
  • Actively engage with colleagues and the facilitator online,
  • Attend two live online discussions (choose from 1/23, 2/2, or 2/16). If not able to attend an additional written reflection will be required.

Who should register

Sign OR spoken language interpreters interested in entering the healthcare interpreting field or increasing their healthcare interpreting skills AND who have:

  • Good English reading skills,
  • Completed formal interpreter training,
  • At least 1 year of interpreting experience.

Dates and Times

January 14-February 27, 2016
Participants will move through the course together, with weekly assignments. Exact times you work on the assignments are up to you.
Live meeting times on 1/23 at 10 a.m., 2/2 at 7:30 p.m., and 2/16 at 7:30 p.m.

Program Description

Week 1: Introductory Texts

  • Read objectives and course description, read comments on safe learning environments, post introduction, complete brief survey.
  • Complete a pre-reading activity and post 300 words in response to discussion questions.
  • Complete assigned reading for this portion of course and post a 300 word response to the discussion questions. Respond to two colleagues’ posts.

Weeks 2-3: Medical Discourse

  • Complete assigned reading.
  • Complete the “try your hand at analyzing medical discourse” assignment.
  • Participate in the live discussion OR post a 200-word reflection on the assigned reading.

Weeks 4-6: Interaction and the Interpreter

  • Complete the pre-reading reflection. Post at least 200 words in response to the questions.
  • Complete assigned reading.
  • Complete the “analysis of healthcare interactions” assignment.
  • Participate in the live discussion OR post a 200-word reflection on the assigned reading.
  • Complete the anonymous course evaluation.
  • Post 3 of your biggest take-aways from this course in the discussion thread.

About the Instructor

Rachel Herring smiling, wears glasses and a blue shirtRachel Herring holds an M.A. in Translation and Interpreting from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a Masters of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training from the University of Geneva, where she is currently a doctoral student. She teaches interpreting at Century College (Minnesota) and is an interpreter at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. She has presented on interpreting and interpreter training in a variety of venues, and is involved in the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare’s training-of-trainers webinar series. Her academic work centers on expertise studies, with a focus on cognitive processes and skill acquisition.
