Description: The following modules provide an introduction to health inequities within the deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (D/DB/HH) communities through an intersectional framework. The module examines various contributors to health inequities, including racial disparities in health and health care and the impact of COVID-19. It explains ways to promote health equity through community-driven actions, including the role of sign language interpreters.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will analyze different contributors to health inequities within the D/DB/HH communities using an intersectional framework.
  • Participants will deconstruct different forms of trauma and how they contribute to health inequities among individuals from marginalized backgrounds.
  • Participants will assess community-level efforts to positively impact health inequities within the D/DB/HH communities, including the role(s) sign language interpreters can play.

Time commitment

This module will take around 20 hours of work. You must invest at least 16 hours of work. There are no set meeting times. All work must be completed by 11:59pm on July 31.

  • Ability to work online and type or video record discussion posts.
  • Ability to record videos when necessary
  • Ability to upload videos to YouTube for sharing with others in Canvas.
  • Ability to access streamed video content.
