Effectively describing anatomy in ASL is a critical skill for any interpreter working with medical content, whether in a doctor's office or a classroom.

Participants will use online resources to create ASL explanations of certain topics, then view sample ASL video from Nigel Howard, Doug Bowen-Bailey and others. After viewing the sample videos, they will apply insight gained to re-creating their own video.

Topics covered include:

  • Blood pressure,
  • Heart attacks,
  • Angiogram/angioplasty,
  • Aneurysms,
  • Atrial fibrillation,
  • How lungs work,
  • Asthma,
  • Lung cancer,
  • Pneumonia,
  • The digestive system,
  • Acid reflux, and
  • What to expect for a colonoscopy.

Work at your own pace. Participants will be able to work as individuals or in small groups on their own timeline to complete these activities. The total amount of time required is estimated to be 15-25 hours.

Workshop Objectives:
By completing all the activities in this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify at least three different types of classifiers;
  • list two different reference scales used in ASL discourse;
  • practice using classifiers in structured activities related to anatomy; and
  • identify at least three resources for continuing professional development.

Individual or Cohort?
This workshop is designed for you to complete the activities without the assistance of a facilitator. This means that you can start when you choose and go through it at your own pace.

For maximum learning, we encourage you to go through this workshop in a cohort. We will set up a private discussion forum for your cohort to enable you to post videos to each other and carry on discussion with each other about the work. Having one or more people to share the journey with you can both increase your learning and hold you more accountable to actually completing what you started.

Online learning can accommodate cohorts working together across distance, so the people in your cohort do not necessarily need to live close to you. It is very beneficial to have an established relationship with your cohort. In terms of number, we recommend somewhere between 3 and 6 in your cohort - but you really can choose to have any number that you would like.

Please note that we will not be assigning people to cohorts. If you wish to participate in a cohort, encourage your colleagues, co-workers and friends to register with you.

Registration fee: $90 for individuals, $75.00 per person for cohorts

Dates: March 1 - August 31, 2011. Start and finish this program any time during this time frame!

RID CEUs: St. Catherine University is an approved sponsor for RID continuing education units. This activity is offered for professional studies CEUs and assumes some knowledge of the topic.
Individual participants can earn 1.2 CEUs. Cohort participants can earn 1.5 CEUs.  The added time is due to the opportunity to watch each other's work and take part in discussions with each other.
You (and your cohort members, if registering as a group) must complete all activities by August 31st, 2011 in order to earn CEUs.

Cancellation policy: Cancellations must be in writing. Cancellations received no more than two weeks after signing up will be refunded 100%. Cancellations requested more than two weeks after signing up will be charged a $10 fee. No refunds will be issued after course content has been accessed.

A Sample: Blood Pressure

The workshop is structured so you can first learn about a specific concept related to anatomy. Web resources, including text, graphics and video build your knowledge of how anatomy is structured and how something works in the human body. From this, you can create an ASL explanation of the concept and then compare it to the samples provided in the workshop.
