LaTanya E. Jones, MSM, NIC, Assistant Director

LaTanya is an interpreter with nearly ten years professional experience in a plethora of professional and video relay settings, specializing in healthcare interpreting. LaTanya is also an adjunct professor at both the Community College of Philadelphia and Camden County College. A staunch lifelong advocate for education, LaTanya earned an Associate in Applied Science in American Sign Language/English interpreting from CCP, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Fox School of Business at Temple University; continued her studies in ASL linguistics at Gallaudet University; and earned a Master of Science in Management from Rosemont College.

Nothing is more important to LaTanya than mentoring tomorrow’s interpreters, today! LaTanya enjoys giving back by volunteering her time and talents with NAOBI-DC as chapter liaison, bylaws chairperson, and volunteer coordinator. LaTanya is also president of the Pennsylvania Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and serves as the Region I Representative for the Interpreters in Healthcare Members Section for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

In her free time, LaTanya enjoys reading, cooking, and watching her son compete in short sprints and relays in track and field.

 

Richard Laurion, MA, CI & CT, NIC Advanced, Director

Richard has 30 years of experience as an interpreter, mentor and educator. He has served on boards of directors, state commissions of the Deaf, non-profit and for profit agencies. Richard’s career has focused on the needs of interpreters living in rural areas. He has developed a reputation for leadership within the field and for supporting innovative and creative products and programs as resources for interpreters working in the healthcare setting. Richard is also an instructor for the Introduction to Health Care Interpreting course at St. Catherine University and works as an on-call emergency medical interpreter in Minnesota.

 

 

Paula MacDonald, MS, NIC, Instructional Designer

Paula holds a certificate in Deaf Studies, an Associate of Applied Science in English/ASL Interpreting and Transliteration, a Bachelor of Arts in Multicultural Interpreting, and a Master of Science in Interpreting Pedagogy. She completed her teaching practicum at Karl-Franzens University, Graz, Austria. Paula is a nationally certified American Sign Language–English Interpreter specializing in deaf professional/designated interpreting, medical, DeafBlind, and government. In addition to interpreting she is a small business owner, a presenter on interpreting-related topics, online adjunct lecturer and independent researcher. She also served as vice chair of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf’s Diversity Council. She lives in Minneapolis, Minn. enjoys traveling and being a lifelong learner.

 

Anaya Mitra, MPH, Ph.D., Evaluator

Anaya is associate professor of psychology at St. Catherine University. Her area of specialization is biological psychology and she received her doctorate from the University of Florida. Her doctoral work examined the impact of maternal obesity on fetal development, using a rodent model. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Florida. Her master’s thesis examined smoking cessation outcomes at the local public health department, following dissemination of information regarding the adverse effects of smoking on one’s health and on one’s wallet. Following her doctoral work, she did a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. She has been on the faculty at St. Catherine University since 2011, and she joined the CATIE Center in 2017. Anaya’s research interests include neural regulation of energy intake and expenditure and understanding the sociocultural and environmental factors which influence food intake and physical activity. She is also interested in, and learning more about, factors which influence maternal health, especially as they pertain to malnutrition, obesity, and infertility.

 

Andrea Olson, Ph.D., Evaluator

Andrea is professor of psychology at St. Catherine University and an evaluator for the CATIE Center. Her specialty is industrial/organizational psychology and she earned her master’s degree and doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota. Andrea joined St. Catherine University in 2001 and has worked with the CATIE Center since 2005. Prior to joining St. Kate’s, Andrea worked at a survey research organization and management consulting firms. At St. Kate’s, she teaches industrial/organizational psychology, statistics, and research methods. She serves on the University Institutional Review Board and she served as Chair of the Psychology Department for five years. Her research interests include team member performance, job performance, and work/life/school balance of college students. She is also interested in cross-disciplinary topics, including understanding the work of healthcare interpreters and designated healthcare interpreters.

 

Rosa Ramirez, Program Manager

Rosa, detail-wrangler extraordinaire, brings 27 years of experience in budget management, event planning, communications, and program management to her work at the CATIE Center. Mainstreamed throughout her education, Rosa has worked with interpreters for most of her life. Rosa is also an editor with T.S. Writing Services and Savory Words Publishing where she enjoys working on an amazing variety of projects. Among Rosa’s many hobbies, do-it-yourself projects, reading, spending time with family, and sitting in the sunshine top the current list.  

 

 

Bridget Sabatke, MS, NIC Master, EIPA 4.0, QMHI, Curriculum Developer

As an interpreter in the field since 2005, Bridget earned a master’s degree in interpreting pedagogy in 2014. Since that time she has been developing effective face-to-face and online education for interpreting students and working interpreters. She specializes in facilitating education in K-12 and Medical interpreting, with a growing specialization in mental and behavioral health. Outside of education, Bridget enjoys supporting the community by founding community-building organizations and serving on local committees and boards in the interpreting and deaf communities. She interprets in a variety of areas including medical, behavioral health and performing arts. Beyond work, Bridget enjoys spending time with her wonderful family of four.  

 

Janine Schug, Program Coordinator/ASL Interpreter

Janine joined the CATIE Center in 2013 as the program coordination assistant. In 2017, she became the program coordinator/ASL interpreter. She works to support both programs of the CATIE Center, as well as managing day to day office needs. Janine graduated from St. Catherine University in 2015 with a degree in ASL & Interpreting. She holds BEI certification, is licensed in Wisconsin, and is currently pursuing National Interpreter Certification. Janine works as a freelance interpreter, primarily in the postsecondary setting and VRS. Additionally, Janine continues to work with interpreting students as a mentor and teaching assistant at St. Kate’s. She currently serves as the professional development chair for Minnesota Registry of the Deaf, and previously served as secretary, the first appointed student representative, and as conference support staff coordinator for the past three years. In January 2017, she was selected to attend the RID LEAD Conference in Salt Lake City on behalf of MRID. In 2018, Janine plans to begin graduate school.

 

Laurie Swabey, Ph.D., Principal Investigator and Executive Director

Dr. Swabey is Professor of Interpreting and Executive Director of the CATIE Center at St. Catherine University. Her doctorate is in linguistics from the University of Minnesota. Her current research interests include interpreting in the healthcare context and interpreting pedagogy. Dr. Swabey’s research has been published in several journals, most recently in Sign Language Studies (2017); International Journal of Research and Practice in Interpreting (2016); Journal of Interpreting (2016); International Journal of Interpreter Education (2016, 2015); Journal of Healthcare Quality (2016); and the International Journal of Translation and Interpreting (2014). Dr. Swabey is also the co-editor of two books: Advances in Interpreting Research (Benjamins, 2011) and Educating Healthcare Interpreters (Gallaudet University Press, 2012). She has served as an advisor to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, as well as on the board of directors for Conference of Interpreter Trainers and American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association. Dr. Swabey’s most recent national and international conference presentations include Critical Link in Edinburgh, Scotland (2016); the 6th International Conference on Public Service Interpreting and Translating in Madrid, Spain (2017); and the International Symposium on Signed Language Interpreting Research in Washington, DC (2017).
